Boxing legend Mike Tyson has revealed that he smoked weed before his match against Roy Jones Jr. It was after 15 years away from competitive matches. Speaking to reporters after an eight-round exhibit in Los Angeles, California, Tyson acknowledged that he had to smoke and it is not the first time. Every athlete undergoes a medical test before any match but luckily marijuana is not illegal.
Will He Stop Smoking?
He confessed that he has been smoking cannabis every day and he does not plan to stop any soon until he dies. “I smoked during fights. I just have to smoke, I am sorry. I am a smoker, I smoke every day. I never stopped smoking,” Tyson said and continued to say ” It is just who I am.“
Tyson is also reported to have been using cocaine which he stopped about three years ago. Luckily, he did not test positive for the drug most probably because it has been long since he last took it. He decided to stick with cannabis which he will not stop smoking any soon according to him.
Did Smoking Affect His Performance?
The match ended a draw and that did not affect Tyson’s view on marijuana smoking. This is something he has done since he was young in the boxing industry. He smoked weed during training sessions and before matches so there was no significant influence of the drug on his fight.
He had incredible matches before a painful loss to Peter McBride back in 2005, which led to Tyson’s decision to retire and since then a lot has happened. He decided to venture fully into the cannabis industry. In 2016, Tyson stormed the industry with a bang by opening Tyson Holistic Holding which deals with marijuana merchandise, premium weed strains, edibles, and extracts. He has been in the forefront fighting for other athletes who are barred from using the drug. In 2019, he and another 149 athletes supported a petition aimed at removing cannabis from World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited substances list.
What Kind of Weed Does He Smoke?
In a podcast, Tyson revealed to have been smoking weed worth around $40,000 per month. He is a fan of Indica cannabis strains and there is an Indica cannabis strain named after him. It is a strain that is not good for first-time users.
Tyson loves this strain which has a pungent diesel aroma because it fully relaxes the body. It also helps relieve chronic pain, insomnia, and stress. Boxing involves enduring some pain and this strain plays a great role in dealing with the pain.
Tyson intends to do more in the cannabis industry through festivals and mass education about the use of cannabis. He also intends to expand his marijuana business to a greater extent. Tyson does not grow cannabis, but as an enthusiast monitors his producers to ensure they reach the standard he needs.
